Hayden AI’s automated bike lane enforcement platform has been in the news recently: in the Independent, on CBS Los Angeles, and in the most recent episode of “Look Both Ways”, a podcast by transportation thought leaders and authors David Zipper and Wes Marshall. The pair discussed the recent launch of Santa Monica’s automated bike lane enforcement program – with Hayden AI technology mounted on the city’s traffic services vehicles – and the positive impact this technology can have on safety for people biking.

In 2024*, 1,166 people were killed while riding their bikes in the United States – a roughly 5% increase from the prior year. This trend is moving in the wrong direction. “Since an all-time reported low of 623 bicyclist deaths in 2010, we’ve seen an 87% increase in bicyclist deaths with consecutive all-time records for the most deaths in the last two years of available data,” according to the League of American Cyclists.

And – as PeopleforBikes reported in its 2024 study of cycling demographics in the US – 53% of American cyclists are scared of being hit by a car. We can do better.

It is gratifying to see Santa Monica and cities like Chicago and Sacramento use our technology to improve the safety of bike lanes. Illegally parked vehicles in bike lanes create enormous hazards for people biking, forcing cyclists to swerve around the illegally parked vehicle into high-speed vehicle traffic. By consistently enforcing bike lanes with vehicle-mounted technology, drivers can no longer park in bike lanes without a high likelihood of receiving a ticket.

This reliable enforcement is what changes driver behavior. In Santa Monica, where Big Blue Bus is already using our automated bus-mounted technology to enforce bus lanes and bus stops, there were 67% fewer bus lane parking violations and 40% fewer bus stop parking violations detected in March 2026 than in July 2025, when the program began, as we shared in a March press release.

We are excited to help Santa Monica deliver these same improvements to bike lanes. The more bike lanes we can keep clear of illegally parked vehicles, the safer cycling can be for everyone.
